I first discovered the Orff Schulwerk approach to Music, Dance and Speech Education during Easter holiday workshops that were held in the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2008.
I remember feeling instantly inspired by the creativity of my Orff Schulwerk teachers (Sofia Lopez-Ibor and Nanna Hlif Ingvadottir) as my group and I were weaved through an imaginative musical journey.
Afterwards, I began to incorporate the Orff Schulwerk approach into my creative practice as an educator and musician. I continued to attend Orff Schulwerk workshops and courses and then, in 2012, I had the wonderful opportunity of being able to study at the Carl Orff Institute for Elemental Music and Dance Pedagogy in Salzburg, Austria. For nine months, I was a student on the Advanced Studies in Music and Dance Education – Orff Schulwerk course, a Postgraduate course for international students often referred to as the ‘Special Course’. Studying in Salzburg was a truly magical experience where I was fully immersed in the multi-disciplinary nature of the Orff Schulwerk approach and its natural engagement with improvisation and creativity in artistic expression.
I feel that the Orff Schulwerk approach has nurtured my ability to communicate musically, artistically, creatively and imaginatively in my work. I am always inspired by the Orff Schulwerk approach as I devise and facilitate music making workshops for children, young people, adults and families.
